Coffee Shops of Dublin: Joe’s Coffee

While it may seem like an unlikely place to find one of Dublin’s great specialty coffee shops, Joe’s Coffee can be found tucked in at the side of Arnotts Department Store next to the Liffey Street Upper entrance. It has an open plan design, so there are no doors separating the coffee shop from the rest of the store, yet once you step into the space that Joe’s Coffee have created, you no longer feel like you’re in Arnotts, rather you feel like you are somewhere else entirely. From the decor, to the music, to the general atmosphere, there is an authenticity to this coffee shop that you won’t find in other cafés located inside department stores or shopping centres.

They have done a great job making the most of the space they had, opting for long communal seating in the centre of the room and along the window, instead of trying to fit lots of smaller tables in. There is also outdoor seating which was completely full on the bright and sunny day we visited. The shelves are stacked with coffee beans and different equipment like teapots, filters, a french press and even a coffee syphon, should you decide to get technical with your coffee making at home.

The coffee

The beans used were roasted by The Barn, Berlin-based coffee roasters who have been extremely popular amongst coffee shops in Dublin, and their beans are among my favourites. They make a really nice, smooth latte that left me wanting another when I finished. Joe’s don’t only do coffee, though. There is a menu full of sandwiches, salads and treats so if you’re looking for somewhere to get lunch, Joe’s has got you covered on that too. It’s also worth noting that they bring your coffee to you, so once you place your order and pay at the till, you can take your seat and get comfortable.

Final thoughts on Joe’s Coffee

A lot of the specialty coffee shops in the city centre tend to be on the south side of the river, concentrated around the same area (although as more and more pop up, this is expanding further and further out). While there are also many good coffee spots on the North side, it can be difficult to find somewhere serving such great coffee in the Henry Street/Jervis/O’Connell Street region, making Joe’s Coffee the perfect spot to stop for a caffeine hit if you’re working or shopping in the area.

They have created a really nice little coffee shop in Arnotts in Dublin, and I hope I get the chance to try their Montague St. and Kildare Village locations some time too!
