Coffee in Galway: Coffeewerk + Press

This past weekend I had the chance to visit Coffeewerk + Press in Galway City while taking part in a mystery train tour to the West of Ireland. The tour was part of the official St Patrick’s Day Festival, organised by JJ Community. Our task was to go out into our mystery destination – which turned out to be Galway – and take as many pictures as we could. However, this is Ireland, and Irish weather pays no mind to your weekend plans. That’s why when on the search for some good coffee indoors, I was delighted to have come across Coffeewerk + Press.

Located on Quay Street near the Spanish Arch, this little coffee shop is both bright, sleek, and modern at the same time as being a nice cosy spot to take shelter from the rain and warm up a bit. Coffeewerk + Press is a design shop as well as a coffee shop – downstairs is where the baristas work their magic, and upstairs is the design store where there is also space to sit down and enjoy your coffee.

The Coffee

When you order your coffee you have a choice of the house blend or the guest – I went for the house blend which was a Coffee Collective Espresso. I thought the coffee was excellent, and very nicely presented in lovely custom cups with a little drawing of the outside of the shop. If you like the coffee a lot, they have bags of the beans to purchase, as well as other products like a Chemex and KeepCups (you can get 10c off your coffee if it’s made in a KeepCup).

The coffee shop

The walls are lined with artwork and the small seating area upstairs is surrounded by shelves with products from different designers and artists, from homeware, to skin care, to accessories, to books, there’s wide range of items to browse through and maybe even tempt you! There are also seats outside, but with the weather as it was, we chose not to sit there. On a nice day though, it would be the ideal place to sit and people watch as people bustle through Quay Street. This seemed like such a peaceful little shop to spend some time in and I almost didn’t want to leave when it was time to head off and re-join our mystery tour group.

If I lived in Galway I have no doubt that this would probably be one of my favourite places to spend my time. I like to go where the good coffee takes me, but with Coffeewerk + Press, you get so much more than a good cup of coffee. If you are visiting Galway and looking for a nice coffee shop, whether you want to stop and rest the legs or just pick up a cup to go, definitely give Coffeewerk + Press a visit.
